The Name of Turkey |
The name of Turkey first appeared in a written resource "Crusade annals" in 1190. But some think that Turkey comes from Italian language, "Turchia". This word was used in the area ranging from Volga river to Central Europe.
Turkey name hadn’t been used till 19th century in Ottoman Period. In Ottoman Period the name of our country was Ottoman Empire and Ottoman State. But foreign countries were using Turkey name instead of Ottoman Empire. Then Young Turks offered Turkestan name to our country. But it was denied, because there was another country named Turkestan. Turkey name has been written in Constitution and has been accepted as formal name of government.
